Professor David Woods' visit to the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Evidence-Based Medicine at the KMU NCJSC

Professor David Woods arrived on September 23, 2025 on academic mobility to the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Evidence Based Medicine at the KMU NCJSC. He is the representative of Evidence Based Network in New Zealand, Editorial Director of the New Zealand Formulary, Professor at the School of Pharmacy of the University of Otago (New Zealand).  

Collaboration with Professor David Woods started 7 years ago on the initiative of Kaliyeva Sholpan, the Chairperson of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Evidence-Based Medicine and since then for many years the department has been developing mutually beneficial cooperation with the visiting professor in educational and scientific activities. 

David Woods is also a clinical counsellor to the Kazakhstan National Formulary, a member of the MSEAG, a member of the Compromise Working Group initiated by the Pharmacy Council, and a regular provider of clinical pharmacy and pediatric drug formulary courses.

Professor D. Woods actively cooperates with the Association of Clinical Pharmacologists of Kazakhstan, actively participates in the organization and hosting international scientific and practical conferences on clinical pharmacology and pharmacy.

Professor D. Woods' research areas are drug allergy, pharmacovigilance of product groups used in clinical practice, population-based drug research, and pediatric pharmacology.

This year at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the KMU NCJSC Professor D. Woods conducted seminars for master's students of the educational program “Pharmacy”, residents – clinical pharmacologists, students of the educational program “General Medicine” on topical issues of evidence-based medicine, drug interactions, complications of drug therapy, peculiarities of prescribing drugs to elderly patients, pregnant women and children, pharmacogenetic aspects of individualization of drug therapy. A separate seminar focused on the main areas of research studies in clinical pharmacology and pharmacy for master’s degree students. 

Professor David Woods noted the innovative methods of training and teaching, professionalism of the faculty members of the department, as well as good knowledge and skills of the students. The professor acknowledged the interesting and relevant areas of initiative scientific research of young scientists of the department and expressed interest in further active cooperation.  

On October 3-4, 2024, the IV Congress of Clinical Pharmacologists of Kazakhstan is held on the basis of the KMU NCJSC, where Professor D. Woods made a presentation on “Medicines Optimization in older people or multidisciplinary management of chronic pain”, in which he outlined the current ideas on the optimization of the use of medicines in elderly people with chronic pain. The information presented was of great interest among the participants of the Congress.
