In Memory of Professor A.E. Shkutin

On March 10, 2026, Professor Arnold Eduardovich Shkutin passed away.Arnold Eduardovich had a long and prolific professional career. After graduating fr om Almaty Medical Institute in 1956, he worked as the Chief Physician of the Alekseevsky District Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in the Akmola region. From March 1958, he worked as the Chief Physician of the Alekseevsky District Hospital, wh ere he also worked as a pathologist.
In 1960, he began working as an Assistant at the Department of Pathological Anatomy of Karaganda Medical Institute.
In 1968, at Altai State Medical Institute, he defended his Candidate's dissertation on the topic of “К патологической анатомии и патогенезу поражений легких при азотемической уремии.” From September 1969, he worked as a senior lecturer, and from July 1975 to July 1985 he was the Head of the Department of Pathological Anatomy at Karaganda State Medical Institute. From February 1988 to May 2002, he worked as a Professor of the Department.
Arnold Eduardovich was one of the first in the Republic of Kazakhstan to introduce transmission electron microscopy method into morphological research. He described the morphogenesis and pathological anatomy of experimental anthracosis caused by hard coal.
The results of these studies formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation, “Патологическая анатомия и морфогенез антракоза, вызванного каменными углями” (1987), as well as the monograph “Антракоз” and a number of guidelines on the morphology of occupational dust-related diseases.
Professor A.E. Shkutin put a lot of time into the study of pathological anatomical diagnosis of drug-induced shock and iatrogenic pathology. He was a highly-skilled professional in pathological anatomy and forensic medicine, holding the highest medical qualification category as a pathologist and forensic physician. He provided consultative assistance to practicing physicians and researchers of various specialties.
He was also the first organizer of student construction brigades at KSMI in 1963 and actively participated in community work within the university’s party and trade union bodies.
Arnold Eduardovich was a man of great erudition, had a good knowledge of classical world and domestic literature, and had a deep interest in poetry, wrote verses himself. In addition to his scientific works on medical issues, he published four collection of verses “Мои творила.”
He was a sociable person, distinguished by intelligence and graciousness, and set the example for his colleagues and students. His lectures were always engaging and emotionally rich. In recent years,he was in a well-deserved retirement, he continued his creative activities and lived in Kirov, Russia.
The faculty members of Karaganda Medical University and the staff of the Department of Pathological Anatomy express their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Arnold Eduardovich.
The memory of our colleague, teacher, and mentor will always remain in the hearts of his colleagues and students.
