Current issues of medical and professional ethics were discussed with the students of the International Medical Faculty
10 November 2025
Medical ethics plays an important part in fostering professionalism among medical students. In recent decades, ethical issues have become a vital part of medical education and professional training of medical students, who should know and understand ethical standards for preparing to medical practice.Assistant Professor N.A. Mingisheva from the Department of History of Kazakhstan and Social-Political Disciplines, along with the M-2019a group of the International Medical Faculty, contemplated the most pressing issues in medical ethics that have been widely debated in medical sciences in recent decades. These ethical issues include reducing inequality in healthcare; the difficulty of decision-making when professional and personal values conflict; involving medical students in patient care; surrogacy, genetics, and reproductive medicine; advancements in technology, using artificial intelligence (AI) and data in medicine; and the role of social media in spreading medical and biological knowledge, as well as its potential in medical education.

Rapid technological and data advancements have notably transformed healthcare recently, but they also pose complex ethical issues affecting patients, health care providers, and society. A primary concern is privacy protection of patients, which is a fundamental ethical obligation for doctors and healthcare facilities. Another important ethical issue is data ownership and its control. While patients can have rights to access and manage their information, institutions often retain ownership. Clarifying these rights is essential to prevent wrongdoing.
Differences in access to advanced medical technologies can perpetuate inequality in healthcare. Ethical practice requires eliminating socioeconomic barriers and ensuring distributive justice among various population groups. Despite a number of advantages, using AI in diagnostics causes difficulties, because algorithms can keep biases from their teaching data. Ethical claims include demanding transparency and explainability of AI decisions, as well as addressing concerns about potential loss of clinical competence and accountability.
These issues of medical and professional ethics sparked significant interest and discussion among the group's students. Many questions were raised, which often do not have definitive answers, as ethical issues in medicine involve solving complex tasks and interactions among doctors, patients, and society.
