Karaganda Medical University and Sorbonne University (France) signed an Agreement on Research Cooperation in cardiology, oncology, and thrombosis.
From October 2 to 8, 2025, Professor Grigorios Gerotziafas (MD, PhD, HDR) visited Karaganda Medical University (KMU) on the initiative of the residency program in Cardiology (Adult and Pediatric).
Professor Grigorios Gerotziafas is a distinguished hematologist, Professor at Sorbonne University (Paris, France), Director of the research department “Cancer, Vessels, Biology and Therapeutics” (CaVITE), and head of the research group “Cancer – Angiogenesis – Thrombosis and Haemostasis” at the Saint-Antoine Research Center (CRSA), INSERM UMRS_938, Faculty of Medicine, Sorbonne University.



Professor Gerotziafas is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in thrombosis, hemostasis, and oncology. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), PhD degree in Cardiovascular Pharmacology from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI), and qualification of hematologist in 2002. In 2016, he was awarded the title of Habilitation à Diriger la Recherche (HDR) of Sorbonne University.
He leads several international research initiatives, including COMPASS-CAT, ROADMAP, and THALOS projects, focused on developing innovative diagnostic tools and implementing artificial intelligence for predicting thrombosis, cardio-oncological complications, preeclampsia, and post-COVID vascular disorders.
Professor Gerotziafas is also a member of the scientific committees of major international organizations such as ISTH, VAS, ETHA, ICTHIC, and etc., and an adviser for European and national expert groups on treatment of thrombosis and vascular events.



Scientific and educational program of the visit
During the visit, Professor Gerotziafas delivered a series of lectures, training sessions, and workshops for faculty members, research staff members, and residents of Karaganda Medical University.
The lectures addressed key topics of modern medicine, including:
• mechanisms of thrombogenesis and congelation;
• prevention of venosus thromboembolism;
• treatment of thrombosis in cancer patients;
• thromboinflammation and endothelial dysfunction;
• significance of artificial intelligence and digital tools in personalized medicine.
The sessions were conducted at the Department of Internal Medicine, under the guidance of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Dana Zhumagaliyevna Taizhanova, within the framework of the qualification upgrade program for health care workforce.



Signing the Memorandum of Understanding
During the visit, an official meeting took place between Professor Grigorios Gerotziafas and Bakhyt Nurgaliyevna Kosherova, Chairman of the Board – Rector of Karaganda Medical University.
At the meeting the parties discussed the prospects for cooperation in medicine, research, and medical education.
Following the negotiations, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Karaganda Medical University and Sorbonne University (France), which confirmed the intention to develop academic partnership, exchange of experience, and joint educational and research projects.
Signing the Agreement on Research Cooperation between KMU and Sorbonne University
On October 2, 2025, during the official meeting between Professor Grigorios Gerotziafas and Chairman of the Board – Rector Bakhyt Nurgaliyevna Kosherova, the parties discussed prospects for joint research, academic exchange, and scientific technology transfer.
Following the talks, the Research Cooperation Agreement between Karaganda Medical University and Sorbonne University (France) is being prepared.
Project supervisors:
• From KMU — Professor Dana Zhumagaliyevna Taizhanova, Professor from the Department at Internal Medicine, cardiology specialist;
• From Sorbonne University — Professor Grigorios Gerotziafas, Director of the CaVITE Research Department, INSERM UMRS_938.
The cooperation focuses on creating innovative diagnostic and prognostic models, enhance the efficiency of cardiovascular system complication prevention, thrombosis and vascular events for patients with cancer diseases and preeclampsia.



Importance of the Agreement
The signing of this Agreement marks a new stage in the development of international research cooperation in medicine and healthcare.
Collaborative work of scientists from Kazakhstan and France will:
• expand KMU’s international research collaborations;
• introduce advanced diagnostic and preventive methods for vascular events;
• enhance academic and research mobility of faculty and young scientists.
Professor Gerotziafas highlighted high scientific potential of Karaganda Medical University and expressed confidence that this collaboration will serve as the foundation for a long-term strategic partnership between KMU and Sorbonne University, Paris, France.
Karaganda Medical University expresses its sincere gratitude to Professor Grigorios Gerotziafas and Sorbonne University for their contribution to the development of scientific and educational cooperation aimed at strengthening international scientific dialogue and promoting innovation in modern medicine.
