100 Years Anniversary of the Birth of Yuldus Abdullayevna Khairova
Professor of KSMI, Yuldus Khairova was the first in Kazakhstan to defend a doctoral dissertation in sports medicine and rehabilitation exercises.
She was born in a village in the Saratov region, graduated from a school in Kyrgyzstan, enrolled at Almaty's medical institute. During her studies, she joined a scientific club on psychiatry and was keen on gymnastics, swimming, speed skating, and cycling.
She was appointed as the head of the newly founded Karaganda Regional Exercise Therapy Center shortly after graduating from university. She joined the KSMI staff in 1952 and became the head of the Department of Physical Education and Medical Physical Training the following year. Yuldus Abdullayevna founded an autonomous department for therapeutic exercises and sports medicine in 1970.
Her primary research interests focused on the impact of physical education and sports on miners' health. The correlation has been conclusively demonstrated, as at the time, just 8% of all working miners engaged in physical activities. The advancement of scientifically based recreational activities has had both a medical and socio-economic significance.
She authored over 300 articles and established the Karaganda Regional Scientific Medical Society for Sports Medicine and Medical Rehabilitation. Under the leadership of Yuldus Abdullayevna, a school of highly skilled specialists in physical rehabilitation was established, training 2 doctors of medical sciences and 7 candidates of sciences.
She pioneered the way for a whole generation of doctors. Her daughter, Professor Nailya Igorevna Sheveleva of KMU, her son-in-law, Professor Andrey Mikhailovich Belyaev, and her grandchildren, Associate Professors Ruslan and Ilya Belyaev, continue on the tradition she started.
